Hometown
I live in a small town called Bandel, situated in the Hooghly district, West Bengal, India. It is famous for its 400 years old church and monastery, 200 years old temple and 160 years old Shia Muslim Mosque and Hall.
All of the these has its own history, beauty and uniqueness. The Church, known as Bandel Basilica, The Church of our Lady of Happy Voyage, was built by the portugese monks. It is a pilgrim place famous for the miraculous statue of Mary, the mother of Jesus. People of all faith visit this place and pray.
The Temple, known as Hangseswari Temple, has a very unique and distinctive structure. It is adorned with the terracotta tiles. The architecture of the temple is amazing to look at. Lot of people from far off places come to visit this temple.
The Shia Mosque, called Imambara, is known for its Sun Dial. The structure and design of the hall and the water fountain reminds us of the Mughal era. The church and the mosque are close to each other. What makes it more interesting is that you can take a boat ride in the river Hooghly to go from the Church to the Mosque.
There are couple of more interesting places to visit if you come to Bandel. Though the above three that I mentioned are the prominent ones.
